Getting Pregnant with Donated Eggs

The path to parenthood can take many forms, and for those who face challenges conceiving, egg donation offers a beacon of hope. This journey is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the incredible generosity of donors. Getting pregnant with donated eggs is a remarkable opportunity, uniting the dreams of aspiring parents with the selflessness of donors.

Treatment with Donor Eggs

Your doctor will prescribe multiple scans to detect and correct any anomalies that may interfere with fertilisation or implantation and optimise the probability of success. This includes a thorough examination of sperm, a uterine saline sonogram, and simple blood checks testing blood count, type of blood, and thyroid function. We also require you to be up-to-date on prescribed health screenings, such as the Pap smear and mammogram (for women over 40). While women achieve high success rates in their 40s with egg donation, as women reach age 50, the risks during pregnancy increase. We need further monitoring whether you are 45 or older to ensure that you begin pregnancy in ideal physical condition. This monitoring includes a diabetic scan, an obstetrician who specialises in high-risk pregnancies, and an EKG for the heart and clearance performed by a perinatologist. Another part of your preparation will be an appointment with our psychologist in order to discuss your egg donation plans and to revisit the different choices you will make now and in the future.

Screening

The whole process usually takes up to 2-4 months for first-time donors and 1-2 months for successive donations. First, you need to undergo medical and psychological screenings. Medical examinations include:

  • blood test,
  • ultrasound tests,
  • genetic screening.
  •

Then you will attend a counselling session with our psychologist before you can begin the next step of egg donation.

Medical Stimulation

As women naturally release only one egg a month, you will need to take hormonal medications for two weeks. These are injectable by subcutaneous needles that go directly under your skin, to allow more than one egg to mature at the same time. You will need 3-5 additional visits to monitor your organism’s ovarian response to the injections.

Egg Retrieval

After about two weeks, once the eggs are mature and ready to be retrieved, your fertility doctor will arrange the procedure. At the beginning, you will be put into sedation, so you will not feel any pain and have no memory of the operation. Then, an ultrasound-guided needle will be inserted vaginally into each follicle to retrieve an egg. You will need to take a day or two off after the procedure before returning to work and other activities, so you can fully rest.

After Retrieval

After the procedure is completed, you may experience cramping and bloating similar to the ones during your period. You can ease the ailments with usual OTC drugs. You will also receive your payment after the retrieval is over.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the age limit for egg donors?

As the quality and quantity of eggs decrease substantially after women reach their 30s, we use only eggs from donors not older than 32, in order to provide intended parents the best and safest chance of a successful fertilisation.

  • How many times is a woman allowed to donate?

Ukrainian law sets the limit of 8 stimulation cycles.

  • What can disqualify a potential donor?

Potential candidates for egg donors may be disqualified for several reasons. These include unhealthy lifestyle (smoking, alcohol abuse, addiction history), general health issues (genetic disorders, incorrect test results etc.), and use of particular types of contraception.

  • Can a woman without children become an egg donor?

No, she can not. According to the Ukrainian egg donation law, participation in the donation process is prohibited for women who have not given birth to at least one healthy child.

  • Can I donate eggs if I am adopted?

Potential adopted donors are not disqualified, although they need to know the medical history of their biological parents and grandparents.
